World Classroom
The World Classroom Program is a short term immersion program geared to integrating international students with local York Region (YRDSB) students. The program runs during the school year from October to May with exceptions of January and March break period. A group of students from a specific country will be scheduled to be in York Region from a given start date to end date. Students in the same grades in York Region schools will be invited to host. Students who volunteer to host will provide homestay placements and will be partnered with visiting students at school. During weekdays, each visiting international student will attend and participate in school classes with his or her partner. The visiting student will live with his or her buddy’s family participating in daily family routines. Excursions will be planned for the visiting students during weekends.
At the end of the program each visiting international student will receive a progress report card and an achievement certificate.
We welcome visiting international students from around the globe: October to November and/or February to May (high school students, ages 14 to 18, Grades 9 to 12) and October to November and January to May (elementary students, ages 10 to 13, Grades 5 to 8).
During the 2012/2013 school year, the World Classroom program is limited to a maximum of 4 weeks in duration.
The group of international students arriving from a given country will be placed in various YRDSB schools across York Region. There will be one visiting international student per class and a maximum of six per school.
Homestay accommodation will be provided by the family of the York Region partner. International students will be provided with three meals a day, a private or shared bedroom, and access to the kitchen and laundry facilities.
International elementary visiting students will attend the same classes with their York Region partners. Secondary visiting students will go to the same school with their York Region partners, but will be able to select different classes to attend depending on their availability.
Students must register as a group (minimum of 15 plus one adult chaperone) and a deposit of C$300 per person is required four months prior to the program start date to secure the space.
