Winter Outdoor World Camp (WOW)
WOW Camp is a unique experience for visiting students which combines winter activities and English immersion with local Canadian students.
Held in January & February, students ages 10 – 18 will join together at Jackson’s Point Camp for English classes, nature programming, and immersion with local Canadian students. Students will be divided into classes according to age and English level for the morning English classes and come together in the afternoons for nature activities.
Immersion into York Region District School Board’s schools will be two full days a week while students are at camp.
Two full day excursions will be planned which may include cultural experiences such as visiting downtown Toronto, Niagara Falls, or outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing, tobogganing, etc.
The program is available for 2, 3 or 4 weeks. Arrivals are encouraged for Sunday with classes beginning the following Monday and conclude on Friday. Departure is Saturday.
Jackson’s Point Camp Outdoor Education Centre is located an hour north of Toronto, on the shores of Lake Simcoe at Jackson’s Point, Ontario’s oldest cottage country. The comfortable facilities are constructed on 50 acres on the shore of the Lake and adjacent to 130 acres of natural wooded land.
While visiting students are participating in the Winter camp, they will be housed at Jackson's Point which includes the following facilities:
Cabins – 9 heated cabins, each with an en suite shower and separate bathroom. Each cabin has a leader’s room with double lower bunk and single bunk overhead. The two separate camper rooms have 3 and 4 bunk beds.
Simcoe Hall – contains 10 bedrooms accommodating 30 guests, and three washrooms with a total of 5 toilets, sinks and showers.
Faculty House – comfortable sleeping for 8 guests in four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lounge area.
The Lodge – a large meeting room for group games, icebreakers, and programming.
The Dining Hall – large room for serving 200+ guests nutritious meals/snacks
Meals: Breakfast 8:00 am, Lunch 12:30 pm, Dinner 5:30 pm and snack 8:30 pm
English classes - English classes will be provided for all students from 9 am – 12 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. English teachers are certified by our school board and specifically trained to teach international students. While attending school with their buddy, students will participate in full-day English instruction in a Canadian classroom.
Nature program – Jackson’s Point Camp runs as an outdoor education facility in which nature programs based on the Ontario Curriculum are offered to students of all ages and throughout the year. Some examples of nature programs include:
Cartography: Applied map and compass skills determine the course of a trail in the forest. In the classroom, the coordinates are then interpreted on paper to produce a map of the trail.
Compass Orienteering: Navigating an 8-point orienteering course offers opportunity to solidify compass skills for application to backcountry travel.
Learning to Look: Art, Language and Science combine as the students work in teams to look in detail at trees, sketch what they see and then use their sketches and a dichotomous key to identify the species.
Thresholds of Extinction: The process of species decline is studied in this activity where students become aware of endangered animals or ‘reasons for depletion’ and play out the forces of the natural world.
